The Deeper Akan Meaning of Sankofa

Sankofa is not a simple "go back and get it."
It is an entire Akan worldview, containing multiple layers of meaning and significance.
1. Sankofa and Akan Cosmology
In Akan cosmology, the universe is:
- circular, not linear
- interconnected, not hierarchical
- ancestrally governed, not isolated
- based on balance and return cycles
Sankofa represents:
The return to origin to complete the cycle.
It echoes the Akan belief that life, identity, and destiny (nkrabea) must be aligned with:
- source (kra) – the soul's divine spark

- lineage (abusua) – where identity is inherited
Without returning to origin, the cycle is incomplete.
2. Sankofa and Akan Concepts of Time
Western time is linear.
Akan time is recursive — events are patterns that return.
Sankofa teaches:
Progress is a spiral, not a straight line.
The future is found in the past; the past informs the future.
This is why a bird looking back while flying forward is perfect as the symbol.
3. Sankofa and the Soul ("Kra")
In Akan thought:
- "Kra" = divine soul, given by Nyame (Creator)
- It comes from a spiritual origin place
- Its mission is learned by reflecting on where it came from
Sankofa is:
the soul's act of remembering itself.
It is spiritual self-retrieval.
4. Sankofa and Ancestral Guidance
The Akan believe:
- Ancestors ("Nananom Nsamanfoɔ") are alive in spiritual form
- They guide, warn, bless, and protect
- Learning from them is a sacred duty
Thus, Sankofa means:
Return and reclaim the wisdom of your ancestors.
Not superstition — spiritual technology.
5. Sankofa and Identity Reconstruction
For Akan people and the African diaspora, Sankofa represents:

It is identity as resurrection.
